CLIMLIST Vacancy: 2-year Postdoc Position at LOCEAN-IPSL (France)

Open position, starting as soon as possible, for a 2-year post-doctoral
position in analyses of ocean-atmosphere simulationsat LOCEAN-IPSL
(Pierre and Marie Curie Paris University, France). This postdoc can be
associated with another postdoc on Indien Monsoon in the same laboratory
if a couple of researchers is looking for 2 postdocs in Paris.

The successful candidate will work at LOCEAN-IPSL in the tropical
climate variability team for a project started in February 2012. She/He
will join a group of physical oceanographers, climate modellers and
engineers to participate in a multi-year project funded by the French
National Research Agency (ANR) and the European project EMBRACE.

This project focuses on new pathways toward a better representation of
the multi-scale physics that drive climate variability. We are targeting
to identify and quantify the key upscaling mechanisms taking place in
coastal upwelling areas, which hold the climate models strongest biases
in the Tropics. Our approach is based on the use of new multi-scale
ocean-atmosphere coupled simulations, performed by introducing embedded
high–resolution oceanic and atmospheric zooms in key regions of a global
climate model.

The successful candidate must show an interest in atmospheric sciences,
air-sea interaction or tropical climate variability. She/He will analyse
and participate to the scientific valorisation of the different
simulations realised within the project (ocean-atmosphere stand alone or
coupled simulations at different resolutions). The exact contain of the
work is still open but the candidate should focus on the impact of
upscaling mechanisms on mean state and phenomenon occurring in the
tropics at times scale ranging from intraseasonal to interannual.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in climate sciences or in a related
field, such as atmosphere or ocean sciences. Previous experience with
statistical climate data analysis tools or atmospheric/climate models
are highly desirable. Programming skills to manipulate and analyze large
data sets is also highly appreciated.
